Remnant from the ashes review12/3/2023 The barren remains of civilization provide weight to the overarching story. Then you travel to a completely different desert world. Beginning on a post-apocalyptic planet earth, the decimated cityscape is fun to explore. The player character travels to four unique planets that offer interesting environments and enemies. The atmosphere on the other hand was really well done in my opinion. Thankfully I enjoyed the gameplay because I certainly did not stay for the story. Really, the story past the midway point in the game felt rushed and incoherent. I won't provide too many details to avoid spoilers but the story builds a solid foundation that crumbles as the game goes on. Remnant's story has you starting in a post-apocalyptic earth that is overrun by an entity known as the root. It is neat that you have to perform different tasks to unlock each trait, although I believe I missed out on quite a few. In addition, I found the trait system to be rather compelling. Timed dodges felt rewarding, and the player has solid control over the character. I found the game to be solid, in terms of character movement. It's unfortunate because they added a slew of melee weapons which provide very little variation, unlike the guns. I found that whenever I would try to utilize the melee, I would end up receiving unnecessary damage. When you do attempt to melee, the jarring character animation, combined with the lack of fluidity makes it difficult to aim. There are only two types of melee attacks - a light attack and a heavy attack. Meleeing in this game is clunky, to say the least. Some of my favourites included the devastator crossbow, the spitfire (the flamethrower mod especially), and the defiler.Īlthough the gunplay was solid, the melee system left a lot to be desired. They offer a solid variety of guns that provide a wide range of different gunplay - which helps keep the game fresh and interesting. I found all of the guns enjoyable - especially the modded ones. The gameplay was easily the best aspect of this game. I'll start my review with the game's strong point, its gameplay. So, a friend and I decided to give it a shot, and man, I am glad we did. I had heard very little about it aside from a comment that it was fun to play with friends. I was fortunate enough to pick up this game when it was free on PS plus a few months back.
